Here’s to Closed Doors and Open Windows

As I prepare to express my thoughts on this page, I’d like to inquire: have you ever experienced a romantic relationship? If not, rest assured you’re not missing out on anything significant. Navigating the ups and downs of love can be an exhilarating yet challenging journey for anyone. However, for those in the LGBTQ+ community, the quest for romantic connections presents its own set of obstacles and victories. In a world where prejudice and societal norms can overshadow the experience of love, individuals who identify as homosexual must navigate a path that requires resilience, unwavering faith, and authenticity. This blog post will delve into the profound struggles, meaningful triumphs, and enduring hope that define the pursuit of love for homosexual individuals. Join me as I shed light on the complexities and joys found behind closed doors and open windows of love as a member of the LGBTQ+ community. (Oh, Mariah the Scientist, the songwriter that you are).

Growing up in southeast Atlanta, I faced numerous challenges that made having a perfect story in any aspect of my life difficult. One particular challenge was navigating relationships. I distinctly recall that my earliest (genuine) crush was in middle school, although I’m relieved that I can’t remember his name now (LOL). Conflicting feelings about my identity marked this period and whether it was acceptable to feel the way I did. On top of this internal struggle, I also had to deal with external pressures from society. Girls in my grade, including some of my friends, would intentionally flirt with me, fully aware of my closet clear as glass, to see me struggle. Their actions ranged from grinding on me to expressing insincere feelings and attempting to kiss me, making me feel like an insufferable prisoner in the confines of my mind.

I began navigating the often humorous and confusing dating world in high school. If you thought straight men were challenging to understand, let me tell you about the men on the other end of the spectrum! (I’m saving it for another day) Being a compassionate and understanding individual, I found myself falling for individuals who excelled at deception. It took time and a lot of experience to learn to differentiate between mere words and genuine actions. I was pretty gullible at first, and it seemed like my name could have easily been “Gullible” in every sense. It’s a learning process, but I eventually developed a willing sense of discernment.

At 19, I experienced my first relationship, and it was quite a surprise (I’m still convinced it was a fever dream). With that, I found myself at my best and worst with the acquaintance of love. While it wasn’t without its imperfections, like any relationship, I am grateful for the valuable lessons it imparted to me and for opening my eyes to the vast world of same-sex relationships. While there is plenty of advice on navigating romantic relationships, there needs to be more discussion about the unique challenges faced by those with homosexuality. It is a different experience altogether.

Despite the challenges, I want to share my belief that love is everywhere and in everything, including within you. Love can be found in your friends, family, pets, and even in everyday objects. The radiant sun, the shimmering clouds, and the mysterious moon all serve as reminders that love exists! You have the ability to breathe life in and out of your lungs with everything that you do. Flowers are a reminder that beauty and love exist, even if you don’t take the time to notice them. By staying true to yourself and connecting with others with similar experiences, finding love and building meaningful relationships based on mutual respect and understanding is possible. Please comment below with your thoughts if you made it to the end; I would love to hear them. Thank you for reading, and I hope to see you soon. xoxo
