Missing #them

HEYYYYYYY! I just released another episode of Maybe It’s Me, and I’m feeling so una that I also decided to make a blog post, more specifically, a post that coincides with the latest episode! We all ask ourselves about the state of music regarding society and whether it’s improving or declining. I often asked myself the same thing until I researched and discovered that it’s all the same. History repeats itself, and that couldn’t be more of a fact.

We would be irate if we were to pay attention to how TikTok and dance trends control what blows a song up. So what better way to not pay attention than to create a distraction, better yet, looking back on earlier years and the moments we took for granted! So! This blog post will spotlight the iconic moments regarding pop culture (specifically music) in my childhood. Get your contacts, glasses, and fingers ready to scroll and look at the moments that shaped my musical approach. *flips hair*

  1. D’Angelo’s “Untitled”

This is one of the music videos that awakened my sexuality. I knew I was gay; no denying it after this. I was wondering if the TV we had was too small because what do you mean I can’t see the rest?! Now, being older, I understand that he went through constant harassment because of this iconic video, and I just want to say that I’m so sorry, Mister D’Angelo; it was too much for little old me. But thank you for making me realize my attraction to men… (Whew, let me exit from this video.. oh my god.)

  1. Ciara’s “Ride”

Do I really need to explain? I have to bring it up twice; I don’t care! I’ll explain for the fun of it! She had nothing but a white background, a studio light, two outfit changes, a luxury car, and a feature, so she had to do what she had to do! Iremember seeing gossip pages trashing her, insinuating that she’s trans, and I feel like that’s when you know you’re ICONIC. If you don’t have LGBTQ+ allegations under your belt because of your confidence, you’re not doing enough. Definition of marketing SEX, and she was sold out by the end of the video, no matter the gender! Give her her flowers NOW. (Also to note: Promise)

  1. Cassie’s “Me & U”

FEMININE. She knew she was the top moment of 2006. Face? THERE. Body? THERE. Music? THERE. The fact that she mainly served slow mos in an empty warehouse???? I’m sorry Cassie was one of a kind like I said in my podcast, #FEMGIRLPUSSYCUNTBOSS. It doesn’t even help that the beat is just SO good! MY GOD. (Also to note: Long Way 2 Go, The Boys, and Official Girl)

  1. David Banner’s “Play”

I JUST WANT TO KNOW WHY I VIVIDLY REMEMBER THIS ON TV. WHY WAS THIS PLAYED?! BET wants to ban “Ride,” but this was played? This man is the epitome of GREED, literally too horny; calm the hell down, oh my god. It’s funny because this video seemed so innocent when I was younger, but the censoring didn’t add up for me. I’m literallycrying and seeing Saucy Santana twerking to this; this song will forever make me laugh.

  1. Remy Ma “Conceited”

I mean… look at the material! I understand she ruffled feathers in today’s time, but she can be free of lashings in my book because of this! The title doesn’t even give the essence of the song and video! She was wearing Emilio Pucci and Roberto Cavalli, so she didn’t need to say anything! “Now who’s that looking in my window? Nobody, cause I live in a penthouse! Baby, I’m sorry, but I’m sexy!” and “CAUSE I’M SUCH A F*CKING LADY!” LIKE PLEASE!

    1. Lil Wayne’s “Knockout” ft. Nicki Minaj

Now this! I vividly remember watching this music video on the TELEVISION and eating my breakfast before going to school. I swear to God, I was 8 years old, gagging, seeing a black woman in colorful wigs being Barbie personified! I probably thought she was unreal cause that face? WHEW. Probably could turn me straight (a STRONG probably)! I just love it when women just play into their femininity, but she didn’t play; it was BUSINESS! (Also to note: 5 Star Remix and Check It Out)

    1. Mariah Carey’s “Up Out My Face” ft Nicki Minaj

Another video I strangely remember from my childhood. I didn’t do much listening to it until recently, when I was an adult, and I related to it because it’s so REAL! Get the FUCK up out my face!!!!! Videos were simple during this time, but the music helped boost their iconicness! “If we were two Lego blocks, even the Harvard University graduating class of 2010 couldn’t put us back together again!” EX-TF-ACTLY! LMAO. Too bad we will never get this again….*sighs*

    1. Lady Gaga’s “Poker Face”

Mother, mother, M-O-T-H-E-R. Out of all the girls at the time, Lady Gaga oozed cunt! I’m rewatching the music video, and the first 10 seconds can give you the exact representation of the music industry when she came in! The LOOKS?! Wearing Antonio Berardi, she didn’t know she would be birthing so many young girls, but hey! I’m f*gging out right now.

    1. Amerie’s “1 Thing”

Hair flowing in slow-mo, fur coat, and heels walking nowhere in the snow? MOTHA. This was a distinct memory for me, and I’m happy to know it never left my mind.

    1. The Dream’s “Shawty Is A 10”

OOOOOOH! I had to include this! Everyone was playing this when it came out: my mother, her boos, my father, EVERYONE, and you understand why! I remember this video strangely and I think it’s because when he called the girls, specifically the one in the blue, she stayed in the back of my mind… no comment.  I love The Dream then and love him even more now! (no homo)

THERE’S PLENTY OF OTHER MUSIC AND VIDEOS THAT SHAPED ME BUT I’LL BE HERE ALL DAY. THESE ARE JUST ONES THAT ARE AT THE TOP OF MY HEAD; THANK YOU FOR READING, AND MAKE SURE YOU LISTEN TO MY NEW EPISODE OUT NOW!!!! TYSM! :**
